about

"This CD is a real treat, one of the finest mainstream discs I have heard for a long time." Eddie Cook

Vol. 2 signifies the 2001 installment of clarinetist/saxophonist Ken Peplowski's revitalization of small ensemble swing as he leads the International All-Stars through an exceptionally inspiring tribute to Benny Goodman. Recorded live on October 14, 1995, Peplowski once again demonstrates his laudable technical faculties and shrewd comprehension of the swing vernacular along with Swedish vibist Lars Erstrand, jazz guitar great Howard Alden, and others. The clarinetist's wistful lines and subtle inflections impel the sextet's altogether infectious spin on "I Must Have That Man," also featuring some undeniably strong soloing by Alden and Erstrand atop a softly swinging pulse. Whereas pianist Mark Shane's hybrid stride/swing and honky-tonk piano solo on the third piece, titled "Jingles," could be viewed upon as an early interlude. However, Shane pulls out all the stops here via a series of rapid-fire chord progressions, affable melodies, and overall conveyance of good cheer. Peplowski also performs on tenor sax while clarinetists Antti Sarpila and Allan Vaché join the band for the final three pieces to culminate the proceedings. Simply put, the musicians give it their all throughout this rather compelling and thoroughly upbeat session! Recommended.
